Is your pup craving some time in nature? Then it’s time for a visit to Dora Kelley Nature Park. This 50 acre gem of a park is a green oasis in the middle of a busy area. Even though your leashed pup is just minutes from city life, they will feel like they are miles away.
A one mile nature path meanders through this woofderful
pawperty. While this trail may not make your pup work up a sweat, it will give
them a chance to be immersed in the wild. Grab a field guide from the nearby Jerome “Buddie”
For Nature Center before setting off on your walk. This handy little pamphlet
has infurmation about the area. Follow the trail as it runs through a puptacular
upland oak hickory forest, and through thick groves of mountain laurel and other
native plants. Your pup’s senses will light up as they listen to the insects
and birds and sniff the smells of the forest critters. If your doggo is still
rearing to go, hop on the Holmes Run Stream Valley Trail found at
the Sanger Avenue entrance to the park. This trail continues on past the park
and runs through interesting scenery like a freshwater marsh.
Since it’s a nature park, the local flora and fauna are
the main focus of this space. It’s also a prime bird watching locale. If your doggo
is quiet and doesn’t spook the winged creatures, you may see woodpeckers,
kingfishers, bald eagles, or maybe even an owl. If your pooch does come across
wildlife during your visit, make sure they mind their manners and don’t bark or
chase the animals. Remember to always have a clean up bag ready to go and pick up after your furry BFF. And don’t forget the water.Â
Have
a pawsome time with your pooch in the lovely Dora Kelley Nature Park!
