In Osage County, Kansas, Eisenhower State Park, formerly Melvern State Park, includes over 1,700 acres of prairie, woodland, lake, and outdoor recreation area. Adjacent to the park is the 10,000-acre Melvern Wildlife Area, which is home to a number of species, including deer, wild turkey, quail, and other waterfowl. The wildlife area is open to hunting by permission only, with the exception of the waterfowl refuge area, and is also a great place to just observe wildlife.
The park offers 186 campsites; many equipped with water and electricity. Thirty-seven have sewer hookups for RV camping. There are also non-utility sites available for primitive camping and 15 equestrian sites with corrals. There are also pet-friendly cabins available for rental. The park also offers a boat dock for boating, a shelterhouse for group activities and events, a swimming beach, picnic shelters, volleyball court, discgolf course, archery trail, kids fishing pond and a fly fishing pond. The trails in the park are open to hiking, biking, horseback riding, and archery.
Reservations can be made in advance by calling the park’s office or through the park’s website. Fees are $5.00 per day per vehicle, or $6.00 online. Annual passes, senior rates, and other special camping rates may apply. Call the park’s office or see the website for a full list of special pricing.
In Kansas state parks, dogs are allowed in most campgrounds and trails, but are required to be kept on a leash no longer than 10 feet in length at all times. Dogs are not allowed on any swimming beaches or swimming areas marked by buoys or other markers. Dogs are also not allowed inside any buildings. Be aware of posted signage that may indicate places where dogs are prohibited, and always be respectful of campground and trail rules.
As with any state park or recreation area, always clean up after yourself and your pet. Make sure your dog is current on all vaccinations. Never bring unvaccinated puppies, females in heat, or aggressive dogs with you.
