Harwinton Conservation and Recreation Area

For a peaceful nature hike with your pup in northwest Connecticut, look no further than the Harwinton Conservation and Recreation Area! Tucked between Whetstone and South Roads in the north central part of town, this expansive site contains acres of dense woods for curious doggos to sniff and enjoy. So lace up your sneakers and leash up your pooch—it's time to go exploring!

There are two places to park your car at the Harwinton Conservation and Recreation Area: one parking lot is on Litchfield Road, while the other is on Bentley Drive, near the town hall and public library. Both provide easy access to the park's nine nature trails, six of which are recommended for hiking. For a pleasant stroll, follow the green trail in the north portion of the site. This half-mile loop will take you and Fido past a pond and picnic area where you can pawse and take in your surroundings. If you and your pooch are up for a challenge, hit the orange trail in the park's southwest section. Though only half a mile long, this path is very steep and should give you a good workout! Water-loving pups will want to check out the yellow trail, which winds alongside Leadmine Brook. Just have some towels or wipes waiting in the car if you're going to let your furry pal dip their paws in the water.

Wherever you go, always keep Fido on a leash and clean up after them. All trash must be packed out, so remember to bring waste bags. Don't furget to bring enough water for you and your canine hiking buddy, too. Though many of the trails are shaded, it's impawtant to stay hydrated. Other park amenities include a children's playground, picnic pavilion, and sports complex.
