South Carolina’s Grand Strand features over 60 beaches, and Huntington Beach State Park is regularly celebrated among the most enjoyable and recognizable. The park boasts three miles of clean, uncrowded beach as well as campsites, a historic landmark, and a dog-friendly attitude. Many who visit the beach go to camp and enjoy the area’s ideal surf fishing conditions, while others enjoy the diversity of bird and animal life that the park sees throughout the year.Â
Several hiking trails and nature walks give you and your dog an opportunity to enjoy the outdoor space while taking in the beautiful surroundings. Sightseers typically opt into a tour of Atalaya, a historic landmark and former home of Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington. Of course, the beach itself is also a large attraction. It is known for being clean and pristine, with few crowds and plenty of space to play. Facilities are spread out all over the park, including restrooms, picnic sites, and accessible water fountains.
Huntington Beach State Park is owned and managed by South Carolina State Parks, and there is a $5 entry fee that gives you access to all but Atalaya, which costs another $2 for entry. Dogs are allowed everywhere as long as they are kept on a 6-foot leash at all times, and the park requires that you pick up after your pet as you go along. Signs are posted informing pet owners that dogs are not allowed inside buildings or on the north side of the beach.Â
There is no need to worry—there is plenty of open, outdoor space for you and your dog to explore. In general, the park and campgrounds are known to be dog-friendly, so bring your dog along when you visit! Few places offer the breadth of plant and animal life that you are sure to encounter if you visit Huntington Beach State Park. Bring your dog, walk the trails, and enjoy one of the most beloved outdoor spaces along the east coast.
