James Island County Park in Charleston, South Carolina is a really great park. Campgrounds and cottages, crabbing and fishing, a climbing wall, an obstacle course, miles and miles of walking trails, an 18-hole golf course, and even a small water park. James Island County Park has pretty much everything you could hope to find in a park, rolled up into an 11,000-acre package, with a wonderful dog park.
James Island County Park is a big place, and because of its size, there is plenty of room for a large off-leash dog park. The dog park is over four acres. It's a large, grassy area with a shallow fresh-water pond, complete with a beach area. The dog park has plenty of seating for people, as well as poop bags and trash cans. Inside the main dog park is a sizeable enclosure for dogs under twenty pounds. Unfortunately, the small dog enclosure does not have beach access.
There is a charge of $2 to use the James Island County Dog Park, however, the money is well spent. The park is kept fastidiously clean, the fencing is always kept in good shape, and the poop bags are always full. In addition to the high maintenance standards, the county hosts "Yappy Hour" at the park throughout the year. Yappy Hour is an outdoor concert with beverage service. Doggies are welcome, of course!
Because James Island is on the South Carolina coast, there is a good bit of marshland on the island. Some of the main attractions on the island involve saltwater fishing and crabbing. Unfortunately, this means that the park is vulnerable to hurricanes and tropical storms. It also means that alligators can be found in the park, so you would be well advised to keep an eye on the weather and your pets. Beyond that, however, the park is a very fun place for people and pets.
