The Joe Wheeler State Park is the pawfect place for some R&R with the whole family, including four-legged members! Accessible by land and water, this resort park offers a modern yet peaceful getaway from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Situated on the shores of Wheeler Lake with easy access to the Tennessee River, the 2,550-acre site includes a waterfront lodge, improved campground, full-service marina, 18-hole golf course, and lakeside cottages and cabins.
Like all Alabama state parks, Joe Wheeler welcomes leashed and well-behaved furry guests and offers dog-friendly overnight accommodations. Pups may stay in select cabins, cottages, and hotel rooms for an additional fee of $15 per night, per pooch. Be sure to book in advance to avoid unwanted surprises at check-in! If you'd prefer to camp in the great outdoors, you may pitch your tent or park your RV at the campground, where you'll be surrounded by hardwoods and pines while having access to modern facilities. Most campsites have full hookup with electricity, water, and sewer, and picnic tables and grills are available at each site.
If your doggo loves their walkies, don't miss the park's trails. The most pawpular paths are nestled between the day use area and resort lodge and span about 2.5 miles. There's also a 2.5-mile multi-use trail for hikers and mountain bikers in the Southside cabin area; you and Fido will find the trailhead near Wheeler Dam. Follow the trails to explore the park while taking in puptastic views of the river. Strolling along the marina and renting a kayak are also great ways to see the water.
Wherever you go in the park, make sure your pup stays leashed at all times and that you clean up after them immediately. Avoid leaving your pooch unattended in your room or cabin—if you have to, place them in a crate or carrier. For a woofderful, relaxing weekend in northwest Alabama, you can't go wrong with the Joe Wheeler State Park!
