There are not many places in the U.S. where your dog can run free and unrestricted over acres of land like they can in the Lake Mohegan Open Space Off-Leash Dog Area. Over 170 acres are available for swimming, running, and exploration, and all you need to do is keep your dog on a leash until you are 100 feet past the parking lot.
Lake Mohegan lies in northern Fairfield, Connecticut, and the lake attracts visitors from all over the Long Island Sound region, some coming from as far as Long Island itself to give their dogs the chance to run free for a little while. The Lake Mohegan Open Space Off-Leash Dog Area will be a favorite for all of you.
Beautiful trails, clear water, and plenty of outdoor space make this area an attractive play place for humans and dogs alike. There are roped off swimming areas for humans, and dogs can swim anywhere else in the lake. Picnic areas are dispersed throughout the park and around the lake, and there are plenty of places to kick back in the shade of a tree and relax.
Although the lake is not a dedicated dog park, you will feel like it is, as dog owners flock to the premises constantly. Fairfield Parks and Recreation governs Lake Mohegan, and parking is free all times of the year except Memorial Day weekend when a small fee is charged at the entrance. Restrooms are available in certain areas of the park, as is clean drinking water.
However, if you plan on hiking deep into the backcountry, you may want to pack your own supplies. Also, although the Lake Mohegan Open Space Off-Leash Dog Area does provide trash cans throughout, you will need to bring plastic poop bags so that your dog’s poop doesn’t leave an unpleasant mark on the beautiful, public land.
You are sure to encounter many dogs and owners, and for the most part, they will be friendly! Whether you are visiting the Lake Mohegan Open Space Off-Leash Dog Area for the first time or have already learned to love it, this is one of the areas that adventurous dog lovers could not live without. Come and enjoy a day at the lake!
