Montrose Park

Montrose Park is a beautiful and historic park that’s perfect for leisurely strolls with your dog. This park was first established in 1911 when the original owner of the land sold it to the US government. The 16-acre park welcomes dogs on-leash, and features lots of great attractions to enjoy.

The entrance to Montrose Park is located on R Street Northwest, between 28th and 32nd Streets. When you enter the park, the first thing you’ll see is a picturesque perennial garden. Then, as you walk along the park’s paved pathway, you’ll pass by a huge lawn that’s perfect for running with your pup. You’ll also go by a croquet court, two sets of tennis courts, and a children’s play area. Be aware that there’s no water or doggy bags in the park—be sure to bring some with you.

As you continue down the path, you’ll pass by two of the park’s main attractions: the stunning Summerhouse and Boxwood Gardens. This house and garden date back to 1804, and they belonged to the original owner of the land, Richard Parrott. The gardens are home to lovely manicured shrubbery, and they also have a historic pergola that you can explore with your dog. You and your pup will both have fun strolling around this historic property and walking through the tree-filled garden!  

If you’d like to extend your walk, Montrose Park connects to the beautiful Dumberton Oaks Park. This forest park is filled with native trees, and it has a loop trail to trek on with your dog. You and your dog will both have a pawsitively amazing time walking through this forest.
