The fast-growing Long Island City neighborhood in Queens, NY is home to the city-run Murray Playground Dog Run. Covering about two acres in the southeast corner of the popular Murray Playground park, this urban off-leash spot is a fur-tastic neighborhood canine meeting place. It’s busiest in the early morning and late afternoon/evening, but only a few dogs are there at other times. This is the paw-rfect spot for pups to socialize, burn off some excess energy, and sniff out all the park “news.”
The fully-fenced run has a security gate where leashes come off and your doggo enters the world of pooch play. Bounded on two sides by city streets, with a playground on a third side, pupsters may encounter some distractions while they romp, but the sturdy fence and security gate keep them safe.
Murray Playground Dog Run offers waste containers and plastic patio chairs. Pet parents need to provide their own clean-up bags, and also need to bring water for their fur babies. Some people bring shareable bowls, as well. While there’s a water fountain nearby, using it would require leaving the dog park.
Surrounded by leafy shade trees, there’s plenty of shelter from the summer sun, and the moveable chairs provide ultimate flexibility for humans to sit while they keep an eye on their pups. The play surface is dirt, with a few small rocks here and there. While the dirt can be muddy after a rain shower, it’s a forgiving surface for dog paws whether they’re wet or dry. Be sure to bring a towel to wipe Fido down before heading home. They might be a bit dusty, too.
Park rules require a current rabies tag along with a license from the city. While inside the run, six-foot leashes need to be off, but kept in hand. Good dog park etiquette is expected from pups, including no aggressive acts like mounting or herding. As always, it's important to pick up after your dog and be polite with your fellow humans.
Murray Playground Dog Run is a fur-bulous neighborhood spot to exercise and socialize your doggo and get some fresh air, too!
