Description

If spending a day in the Connecticut outdoors with your dog sounds like a furrific idea, head on over to the Pattaconk Lake Recreation Area! You'll find this pawsome site in the Cockaponset State Forest, which spans 11 towns and is Connecticut's second largest state forest.

Since the Pattaconk Lake Recreation Area is home to the Pattaconk Reservoir, some of the park's activities center around the water. Many visitors come here for the fishing, boating, and swimming opportunities, but trails also abound for those who prefer to stay on land. So if your pup loves climbing over things and exploring unfamiliar territory, they're in for a treat at Pattaconk. You and Fido can walk around the lake by following a couple of the blazed trails, as well as venture into more secluded waterfront spots by taking the unmarked side paths. Some of the trails are designated for multiple uses, so you might find yourselves sharing them with mountain bikers and equestrians.

Most of the trails in the recreation area are pretty easy and shouldn't be a problem for active doggos, allowing for a pleasant hike in the woods and around the reservoir. If you'd like to plan your route in advance, you can download a map online or check the one posted near the main parking lot before setting off. Don't forget to bring lots of water to keep yourself and your pup hydrated, as well as lunch and snacks so you can refuel after your hike. And as always, keep your four-legged pal on a leash and bring clean-up bags too!

Camping in the forest is only available to youth organizations, so come early to make the most out of your visit. Note that if you're not a resident of Connecticut, there is a seasonal parking fee of $15 during weekends and holidays.

Enjoy a relaxing day in nature with your pooch at the Pattaconk Lake Recreation Area!

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.
