The Raccoon River Dog Park is a large, paid dog park located in West Des Moines, Iowa. Annual permits are required to gain access to the dog park and cost $20 per dog for West Des Moines residents and $40 per dog for non-residents. However, if you are not sure whether it is worth to make the investment, feel free to check out the park and its facilities by purchasing a day pass for $5 that can be obtained at the Parks and Recreation office or at the Raccoon River Park Nature Lodge.Â
The 10-acre dog park has a well-thought-out layout and is located right by the spacious parking lots. There is a dual gate entrance to the dog park, a paved area by the entrance with water fountains, trash cans, and biodegradable waste bag dispensers. There is also a separate entrance to the small dog area that is approximately half an acre in size.Â
The large dog area is seven and a half acres and provides tons of space for canines to run around, explore, socialize, and play. Even though the park is very popular and highly rated, it rarely feels crowded due to its size. Right next to the large dog area is a tallgrass prairie with mowed paths that you can take your furry buddy on as well as it is securely fenced.
In addition to the above, there are filled water jugs strategically placed throughout the entire dog park, enabling dogs to remain hydrated at all times. There are plenty of benches scattered throughout the off-leash areas which is great as it allows owners to keep their dogs in sight as they explore the groomed open fields as well as the grassy, wooded areas of this wonderful dog park. The regular patrons are said to be very friendly and welcoming, making this park one of the most popular ones in the area.
