East of the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon, there are plenty of parks and open spaces that you can take your dog. Among these is Sewallcrest Park, conveniently located between the main shopping and dining areas along SE Hawthorne Street and SE Division Street.
The Seawallcrest Park itself occupies approximately five acres, featuring sports areas and a children’s playground along with an off-leash dog play area referred to as the Sewallcrest Park Off-Leash Dog Area. Street parking is easy and accessible, so you will be able to leave your car in case you want to explore the surrounding areas.
The field and play areas are made of an engineered mulch, so your dog will not get too dirty or muddy unless it is a particularly wet and rainy day. Part of the park is fenced in, but the rest is left unfenced so be sure your dog has good recall. If you want to strike up a game of softball or basketball, you can do so while your runs free on the field with you.
Be sure that you pack in your own poop bags so you can do your part in keeping the park clean and pleasant for all to use. The park is managed by the City of Portland, and it is free for all to use. You will have to call ahead if you want to reserve a sports field, but other than that, you and your dog can drop by any time and enjoy the space.
Picnic tables are available at the Sewallcrest Park Off-Leash Dog Area as well in case you would like to bring your family and pack lunch in, but there are no restrooms at the park, so plan accordingly if you are seeking to stay more than a few hours. You will also need to pack in your own water, as there is no potable water at the park.
If you want to explore the local area and are hoping to take your dog along with you, then the Sewallcrest Park Off-Leash Dog Area is the perfect place to be. You and your dog can come in and out of the park easily while exploring all that there is to do along Hawthorne or Division!
