Shikellamy State Park

Located in Northumberland and Union counties, Shikellamy State Park is a pet-friendly state park that also caters to families with its numerous facilities. The massive Shikellamy Marina has 54 acres of space and is on the southern tip of Packers Island. It boasts of hiking and biking trails, as well as a marina and boat launch. 

Some of the facilities which the whole family can enjoy are picnic areas, a picnic pavilion, butterfly garden, and ample parking for those who would like to drive to the location. The playground is a sure hit with children, and there is a snack building nearby where tiny tots can buy food if they get hungry. 

Shikellamy Overlook has 78 acres of space and is on the western shore of the Susquehanna River, but it is closed during the winter season. The overlook offers spectacular views of Northumberland, Sunbury, and the surrounding areas. If you are ever at the marina, look out for the scenic view of Lake Augusta and the river. 

Drinking water is available at the state park, so visitors need not bother bringing a water jug for them and their pooches but if you are going on a hike or a bike, do remember to bring a water container for you to refill so you do not end up dehydrated. Dogs are welcome in Shikellamy State Park and are permitted on the forest trails, but they have to be on a leash and must be attended to at all times. 

Various campgrounds have been set aside for dogs; however, they are not permitted in the swimming areas. Dog scooper bags are not available, so it is a must for pet parents to bring some to clean up after their dogs. The grounds are clean and well-maintained, and visitors are urged to keep it that way, for everyone to enjoy.
