Southwest Community Park Off Leash Area

Southwest Community Park in Santa Rosa, California, is a 19.1-acre multi-use park that includes terrific trails for long walks with your dog, so long as your four-footed friend remains on a leash. This park, located at 1698 Hearn Avenue, is a park the city has invested in, making sure it has many of the exercise options people enjoy. 

Front and center, because this is California, after all, is a very showy softball field that tells you what the priorities are in the state that gets more than its share of sunshine. There is also plenty of parking along Hearn Avenue, which, given the length of their legs, is close to the children's play area. 

The Southwest Community Park also has basketball courts, a soccer field, lots of wide open grassy areas, and an entertainment area that includes a gazebo for community concerts and the like. It will not help your dog very much, but the park is easily accessible by city bus. 

Meanwhile, the fenced in area that you see is not a dog area. The fence is there to keep dogs and people out, as it is protection for the vernal pool which is dry most of the year, but flush in the spring. Water being what it is in Southern California, the city is protecting its resources to ensure the park remains green in the future. 

After exploring the park, if your dog is not completely satisfied, the city has dog park sections of various sizes that range from a 0.2-acre place to pee to a 0.8-acre “Place to Play Park,” that probably has the best name of any park anywhere, whether it is dedicated to dogs or not.
