Are you and your pup up for a pawtastic hike in Georgia? Then pack up Fido and head to the city of Hamilton where the Cason J. Calloway National Recreational Trail is waiting for you. This trail will immerse you both in nature and leave you fit, relaxed and rejuvenated!
Pick up the trailhead at the main entrance to the Cason J. Callaway Memorial Forest on Blue Springs Road. There are over 2000 acres here to enjoy, but sticking to this trail is highly recommended! There is no entry fee here, so you can park, gather your gear and your pup, and be off!
This backcountry hike will take you through deciduous and coniferous forests. This is a special area where the northern and the southern-loving plants come together offering you quite a special mix of flora. The trail runs for 8 miles out-and-back and is considered easy to moderate. Joggers and hikers use this trail, but it is not recommended for bicycles. Wildflowers grow abundantly in the springtime. You will be treated to lakes, rivers and streams throughout your hike, making for surprises at every turn.
There are many out-of-the-way places where you can let your pup off leash, but while on the trail, please be considerate of others and keep them leashed. They will enjoy getting their feet wet and splashing in the streams along the way. You can expect to see lots of local wildlife here, so make sure to keep your camera handy! Remember to snap a few of your pawtastic pup!
Restrooms are located at the trailhead, but pack your own water bottles. The footing is all natural which can become muddy after a heavy rain. A dog towel is great to keep handy on your hike, just in case Fido gets dirty! The Cason J. Calloway National Recreational Trail will keep you and your pup entertained and fit at the same time!Â
