Description

The Feeder Canal Towpath Trail is a beautiful trail that takes you along the historic Feeder Canal. This canal was built in the 1820s to help maintain the water level in nearby Champlain Canal. The nine-mile trail along the canal has almost no elevation gain, making it easy for pups to walk. Dogs are welcome to join you on this pawesome trail on-leash.

The Feeder Canal Towpath Trail has two trailheads: one in Glen Falls at Feeder Dam and one in Mullen Park in Fort Edward. If you choose to begin at the Feeder Dam trailhead, the first sight you’ll see is Feeder Dam and the remains of Lock 14. As you continue down the path, you’ll see Haviland Cove Bridge and Pruyn’s Island. Back in the 19th century, sawmill workers used to stack dry lumber here, and many workers also lived on the island.

After that, you’ll pass the Murray Street Bridge, which goes to a historic dry dock. Then, you’ll see a small waterfall with a cave at the bottom, which is called Cooper’s Cave. This cave was featured in The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper.

After you pass the waterfall, you’ll get to see more remnants of the sawmills that used to operate along the canal. This includes the ruins of numerous limestone kilns and the remains of an old loading dock. Then, you’ll get to the Martindale Boat Basin, which is home to lots of picnic tables, making this the perfect place to stop for lunch or a snack! The last part of the trail takes you by a series of historic locks. Then, the trail takes you past a scenic farm before ending in Fort Edward’s Mullen Park.

The Feeder Canal Towpath Trail is a pawesome waterside trail that provides lovely canal views and takes you past tons of historic sights. Remember to bring doggy bags so you can clean up after your dog, and enjoy strolling down this fun-filled trail!
