Topping off the list of great trails in the Birmingham, Alabama area is the George Ward Park Fitness Trail inside the George Ward Park. Located in the north-central portion of the state, this trail offers a respite from city life and a way for Fido and you to get out into the city’s natural settings.
The trail has the distinct honor of being listed on the National Recreational Trail register and is a highlight for area residents and visitors. Your pup will love the 1.5-mile hike which offers scenic views, the shade of trees, and a dirt footing, which is easy on the feet and paws! The path opens up into meadow areas, so your pup can run on an extended leash. Relaxing is first priority here, so there are plenty of benches throughout your walk which allow you to sit and view the surrounding park.
You will find restrooms and drinking fountains in the park itself, so all you will need to bring is some water for the hike and clean up mitts to keep this park pup-friendly. And don’t forget some snacks! There is a dog park inside George Ward Park for your pup when you are finished your hike where Fido can romp with the big boys and strut his stuff off leash. Take a minute for yourself, sit on the picnic tables and watch the pups’ antics.Â
The park is maintained, in part, by the city’s botanical garden which means increasingly beautiful plants and trees will always remain along the trail. This trail is considered a fitness trail, so runners are also present. Please be aware and keep your pup next to you so you can allow the other nature lovers to pass!
The George Ward Park Fitness Trail is a great place to hike with your pawtastic pup!
The Alabama weather can be quite hot and humid year-round. Be sure to keep your pup cool and take plenty of rest breaks from your hike.
