Description

Herring Run Trail is a firm favorite of Baltimore's pups, offering ample space to roam and enjoy an escape from city life. This 2.5-mile asphalt trail might be a bone's throw from a major highway, but you'd never know by the scenery. This piece of woodland paradise features a serene landscape, plentiful wildlife, and a beautiful babbling brook.

Herring Run Trail runs along a tributary of the same name, which feeds into the Back River and provides a gorgeous backdrop to family walks. Since the trail is in a heavily wooded area, you can enjoy a comfortable walk even in the warmer months.

Animals aren't the only things you might stumble across on your hike — in 2021, an archeological dig in Herring Run Park uncovered Native American artifacts over 5,000 years old. Who knows what piece of history your pup might unearth on their expedition!

The main park has lush green expanses that are perfect for a game of fetch — just make sure to keep your dog leashed while playing. As with any park, you should do your part to keep it clean, which means bringing poo bags and disposing of waste in the appropriate receptacles.

The Herring Run trailhead is only 15 minutes from 2 "pawpular" Baltimore dog parks: Patterson Dog Park and Canton Dog Park. So you've got plenty of off-leash opportunities to keep the adventures going if your pack isn't ready to go straight home. Don't skip visiting Lake Montebello during your trip, either. It's only a short walk from the park and makes a "furrific" spot for picnicking.

Your fur-baby will love the chance to sniff out this picturesque trail and make friends with the other four-legged walkers. Herring Run Trail is a local favorite for a reason!

Are you unable to hit the trails with Buddy as often as you'd like? Book a local dog walker to meet your pup's exercise needs on those busy workdays.

Cautions & Considerations

While this trail is mostly paved, the grassy areas can get quite muddy after a good rain. You might want to bring some towels to wipe Fido's paws if they like to explore off the beaten path. You may also want to bring some dog-safe bug spray since the stream tends to attract mosquitoes and other flying insects.
