You'll find Inspiration Point Trail in northern Wolf Lake, Illinois, not far from the Missouri border. The Inspiration Point Trail is an out-and-back trail that's rated as moderately difficult, and it can be completed in under an hour. This 0.8-mile trail is only lightly trafficked, and your dog can join you if they remain on their leash for the duration. Be sure to bring drinking water for you and Sparky as well as a supply of doggie bags.
When it comes to views of the Mississippi River Valley, it's hard to beat this hike! While the beginning of the walk has a few steep areas to climb, before long, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views that make it all worth it. In addition to the Mississippi River Valley, you'll also get excellent views of the Big Muddy bottomlands. In fact, these views are so astounding that visitors suggest packing a lunch to eat at the summit and enjoying it for as long as you can.
Although this is a short hike, there are plenty of things to keep in mind along the way. Some parts of the hike pass dangerous cliffs, so you and your dog will need to tread carefully. Hiking boots are recommended to help you traverse any obstacles, including slippery rocks after it rains. In addition to structural obstacles on the terrain, there's a variety of wildlife that can be found along the trail, including some you'll need to exercise caution around. Be on the lookout for vultures and poisonous snakes. If you'd like to avoid ticks, you're encouraged to hike this trail during the winter.
At the trail's summit, you'll sit at Inspiration Point, with drops of several hundred feet on either side of you. True to its name, visitors say this is one of the most inspiring places in the state that you can enjoy with your four-legged best friend!
