If you and your pup are looking for a pawesome trail to do in the Presidio, check out Mountain Lake Trail! This pawpular 2.6-mile trail welcomes dogs on-leash, and it takes you through tons of scenic areas.
The trail begins at Broadway Gate on the southeastern side of the Presidio. From here, the trail takes you along the southern edge of the 1,500-acre park. As you start your walk along the trail, you’ll go through a wooded area. Then, you’ll pass by the Julie Kahn Playground, where restrooms are available. After that, you’ll go by the Presidio Golf Course.
After you pass the golf course, you’ll reach beautiful Mountain Lake itself. Mountain Lake is home to tons of wildlife, including Pacific chorus frogs, western pond turtles, and 65 species of migrating birds. Restrooms and picnic tables are available next to the lake, making this a furtastic place to stop and have lunch or a snack with your dog!
The next part of the trail takes you to a vista point where you’ll get a great view of the historic Merchant Marine Cemetery. Then, you’ll walk through one of the Presidio’s newest neighborhoods on Wyman Avenue. After that, the trail turns into a boardwalk, and it takes you through sand dunes that are filled with wild birds. The trail ends on beautiful Baker Beach, where you can relax with your pup and enjoy views of the Pacific Ocean.
While exact elevation information isn’t available for the Mountain Lake Trail, the trail is mostly flat, with just a few easy inclines. Mountain Lake Trail is a fun-filled trail that takes you past a wide variety of scenic areas that you and your pup will both love. Bring some doggy bags so you can clean up after your dog while you’re hiking, and have a great time trekking here!
It’s a good idea to bring water for you and your dog with you for your hike. Also, be aware that there’s limited shade on many parts of the Mountain Lake Trail. Be sure to give your pup extra water as you’re going through these sections.
