Rend Lake Bike Trail is your ticket to adventure with your pawtastic pup in the city of Whittington, Illinois. Located in the south-central portion of the state, this 20-mile trail offers something for everyone.Â
It is a multi-use trail, which begins in the Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park and meanders its way to and around Rend Lake, and is the perfect place to take your fur-ever friend for a short stroll or an excursion for miles. You will see walkers and hikers, bicyclists and even horse back riders as you enjoy the scenery here.Â
When you arrive at Rend Lake, you can take your pup for a swim or even do some fishing! It is a great location for a picnic lunch as well, where you can renew yourself for the return trip. The terrain of the path is almost completely level, making it a perfect walk for any pup-fitness level. It is also handicapped accessible and appropriate for service dogs.
If you make it the entire length, you will end at North Sandusky Campground where you can plan an overnight stay with your pup. This campground is a great location to rest and enjoy scenic views of the lake. Pup-friendly tent camping or cabin rentals are available.
You will find restrooms and drinking fountains at the beginning of your hike at the park on its 3,300 acres of land. It is important to keep Fido on leash during most of your hike, however there are out-of-the-way, less populated places where they can run free. Much of the trail is shaded but there are open spaces, so plan accordingly for the hot, summer months. It is advised to bring plenty of water if you intend to be hiking for a long time.
