Description

Are you and your pup looking for a pawtastic hike in Alabama? Then put the Turkey Creek Nature Preserve at the top of your list! Located in the city of Pinson, in the center of the state, this trail system offers something for everyone!

This preserve offers you 5 trails of various lengths, including both out and back and loop trails. Please check on the informative trail signs for details. You can access the trails at the Main Entrance to Turkey Creek, or at different locations along Turkey Creek Road. There is a total of 6.25-miles of trails which meander throughout the preserve, offering easy to moderate-rated hikes. Every trail is pup-friendly and suitable for all fitness levels, offering spectacular scenery in a wooded setting.

From the main entrance, hop on the Highlands Trail for 0.38 miles, designated for hikers, which runs along the creek, or the moderate-rated Narrows Ridge Trail which will take you 3.2 miles in an exploration around the entire preserve, eventually returning you to the entrance. This is a shared trail with bicyclists. Or take the Hanby Hollow Trail for 0.9 miles and pick up the Thompson Trace Trail for 1.4 miles. Both are for hikers only and offer an easy rating for you pup! The 0.35-mile Boy Scout Trail can end the day with a short walk.

As part of the Appalachian Highlands Birding Trail, this preserve is visited by many bird lovers as well. Hours vary by season and day. Mondays and Tuesdays, the preserve is closed. From  November through March, the preserve is open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to  4 p.m. March through November enjoys extended hours, and closes Wednesday through Sunday later at 5:30 p.m. Special pedestrian hours are on Friday and Saturday from 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m to allow hikers to have the trails all to themselves. All the trails have a natural footing of either sand or dirt, which is easy on the paws! Restrooms and picnic tables can be found scattered throughout the preserve, so why not bring lunch and stay for the day?

You will never be bored hiking here as each visit can be a new adventure with your fur-ever friend at Turkey Creek!
