If you are searching for a great hiking spot, look no further than the Virgil L. Gilman Nature Trail in the city of Montgomery, Illinois.
Part of an 11-mile trail called the Virgil L. Gilman Trail, the nature trail by the same name is a 3.5-mile segment, which is paved and pawtastic! It is handicapped accessible and is used by bicyclists and skaters. Making up the eastern section of the entire 11-mile route, you will pick up the trailhead 0.6-miles from the intersection of Montgomery Road on Hill Avenue in Montgomery.Â
You and your pup will love this nearly level trail, which was once part of the Aurora-DeKalb railroad line running through the area. This old rail trail offers the perfect path, suitable for all pup skill levels. It will take you across a covered bridge over the Fox River and offers a scenic place to rest and snap a few photos of this last 1800’s trestle.Â
Other sights you will see along this nature trail include native trees and shrubs, a small wetlands area and an offshoot trail which takes you to Blackberry Farm, a replica of a pioneer village. Some areas of nearby residential areas are blocked from sight, so you never feel like you have gotten far from nature.
Another trail you will find towards the beginning of your journey is the Fox River Trail which runs for a whopping 44 miles to other Illinois cities. So, if you are in the mood to continue you journey, you will never run out of somewhere to hike! There are no dedicated restrooms for this trail, so please plan accordingly, and be sure to pack plenty of water and snacks for your hiking day together with your fur-ever friend. Keep Fido on leash and clean up after him.
