Ludlow is a suburban town of the larger Springfield, Massachusetts metropolitan area. The Ludlow Center Street, running north-south through the area is a commercial corridor with plenty of restaurants, shops, and other services that residents can reach on foot while enjoying a walk near home. There's even a pet supply shop located in the Ludlow Centre area, Dave's Soda and Pet City, where you can walk your dog for a treat or get your pet supplies. This area has a strong Portuguese community and several festivals are held in the area throughout the year celebrating the town and the Portuguese culture.  

Residents will experience lots of different weather conditions throughout the year and will need to be prepared when walking the region. Ludlow is transected by the Massachusetts Turnpike which creates a barrier for pedestrians traveling in the district. If you are walking down the Center Street, there is a sidewalk along the road that intersects the turnpike at an underpass, allowing pedestrians to safely cross. A cemetery and country club are located in Ludlow and the main commercial corridor of Center Street is lined with businesses and has heavier traffic than surrounding residential areas, so it's important to keep your dog leashed in these areas.

There are some hilly areas in the neighborhood that will require a bit of a climb when walking but they are not too steep and usually do not present a major problem for pedestrians and pets. 

The north of Ludlow Centre features rural farmland and there are large natural areas to the east. The Chicopee River and Wallamanumps Falls are located on the southern border. Haviland Pond has residences backing onto it and a public beach.

The surrounding rural and natural areas along ponds, rivers, and the creek provide plenty of green space and greenways that can be enjoyed on natural trails created by local users and wildlife or from adjacent sidewalks. These areas are nearby for Ludlow Center residents, however, larger parks with maintained trails can be accessed with a short drive by vehicle.  

Chicopee Memorial State Park provides 572 acres of natural area with miles of trails and greenways to explore with your pooch. There is a reservoir with beaches, fishing, and natural waterways in the area. Picnic areas and rest spots are also available. 

5-mile Pond Park and the Lake Lorraine Preserve are also a short drive away and provide ponds with trails and plenty of trees and open areas to enjoy with your dog. There is a beach, kayaking, and canoeing available. Teach your dog to ride quietly on a kayak or canoe and enjoy some waterway fun!
