Teaneck is a township in New Jersey. The west side of Teaneck is a residential neighborhood with a few small commercial areas that residents can walk to along American Legion Drive on the eastern section of West Teaneck and along Cedar Lane. The residential area is beautiful for taking your dog for a daily walk and New Jersey's moderate climate is usually amenable to on foot travel.

Be aware, however, that winters can be cold and snowy, although Teaneck's proximity to the Atlantic Ocean greatly moderates the snow and winter temperatures. Have a warm jacket and good footwear available for daily walks during the winter season. Spring can be rainy in this climate and an umbrella is usually advisable during this season when you venture out with your pooch. Summers are hot and humid and prone to thunderstorms. Autumn tends to be dry and sunny with beautiful autumn colors, so enjoy this ideal walking weather.

West Teaneck is bordered by the Hackensack River on its west border, Route 4 on its north, train tracks on its eastern border, and the community of Bogota on its southern border. This area is heavily residential with mostly single-family homes, although a low rise apartment building and multi-family complex are also located in the community.  Single-family, often historic or character homes are the norm in this region, often displaying beautiful architecture. Residential properties are green and landscaped with large mature shade trees that throw plenty of cover for passing pedestrians.

There are several schools and churches in the area as well as a university on the far west side with landscaped properties. The district is hilly and pedestrians strolling with their pooches will need to navigate some steep inclines. If you or your dog has mobility issues, you may need to adjust your route to avoid some of the more strenuous hills.

In spite of its location in a highly populated area of New Jersey, West Teaneck has plenty of parks and greenways. Phelps Park has sports facilities and athletic fields, a playground and spray park, and picnic and barbecue spots. There are paved pedestrian paths through the park and, even better, an off-leash fenced dog park is located here where your dog can play with other neighborhood pooches.

Herrick Park has trees and open grassy areas to run and play with your energetic pup or rest under a shady tree. Terhune Park is situated along the Hackensack River and has both recreational and passive use areas. This 10-acre park has athletic fields and sports facilities, eight species of trees, and also provides access to the Hackensack River Greenway. This park and greenway are ideal for walking your West Teaneck tail-wagger!

Also in West Teaneck, Tokoloko Park provides 11 acres of passive use natural area with a gently sloping trail.
