Far Rockaway is an urban neighborhood on the Rockaway Peninsula in the New York City borough of Queens. The bustling neighborhood stretches from Beach 32nd Street east to the Nassau County line. There’s a multitude of dog-friendly streets with flat terrain to walk your pup. To the south of the neighborhood is also some refreshing green space where your pooch can stretch their legs.
Although often bustling, the lively neighborhood is home to over 60,000 people, many of which own dogs. This means plenty of opportunities to stop and chat with other dog owners while your pups socialize. Of course, you can always head south to more green spaces and the coast if you want some peace and fresh air.
New York climate ranges from cool to very warm, promising lots of ideal weather to walk your canine companion. In fact, because you don’t have extreme hot and cold weather, dogs of all sizes should be able to thrive in Far Rockaway's climate.
Far Rockaway is a mostly residential area. Streets mainly consist of houses, shopping centers, and everything a busy population needs to survive. The advantage of this is a flat terrain with minimal hills. Therefore, walking your dog in this environment is straightforward, regardless of age. It also means dog owners with a disability can easily access suitable spaces and amenities.
But while the residential area is mostly flat, you will find a more natural and uneven terrain if you head south to the coast. Both the green space and beach are a little more hilly and challenging. With that said, the majority of dog walkers will feel comfortable navigating the space. More importantly, Fido is likely to love roaming around the more untampered environment.
Essentially, dog owners have the benefits of living in a populated area with amenities close by while some quieter, greener spaces are just a short walk away.
Head a bit further south and you’ll soon arrive at the coast. Here, you’ll find a lovely green space that runs along the sea. This large area is dog-friendly, so you can let them off their leash and watch them run around to their heart’s content. The long green space also attracts other dog owners, so you meet and chat with fellow dog lovers. There’s even a small, accessible beach! This is perfect for letting larger dogs roam around and dispense energy. It also means you don’t have to worry about busy traffic.
If you need to quickly take your dog out before work or you’re in a rush, then there are a few small green spaces around. Evenly spread across the neighborhood, finding some green space for your dog takes but a few minutes. Of course, Far Rockaway is primarily a residential area, so for larger green spaces, you will need to head south to the coast.
