Wag! Walkers know Lewiston Rd/ Macklem Ave

The Lewiston Road and Macklem Avenue intersection is part of Niagara Falls, New York, just south of Lewiston. This quaint neighborhood is ideal for walking with a dog. The streets are lined with older trees and homes and are easily navigable. Sidewalks are available for access on both of these roads as well as the side streets that run off of them, including Findlay Drive and Chestnut Avenue. The most significant advantage that the neighborhood has is its proximity to the De Veaux Woods State Park and the Whirlpool State Park. Both are excellent locations to walk a dog.

Because it lies on the Niagara River, this area is prone to cold weather in the wintertime including high winds and heavy snowfall. Icy conditions can make walking difficult, so caution should be taken in this type of weather. Spring can be cold and rainy, while summer and fall generally provide the most comfortable opportunities to walk outside.

What is the terrain like in Lewiston Rd/ Macklem Ave?

The suburban environment around Macklem Avenue and Lewiston Road is flat and highly walkable, making it an ideal location for dogs that are less prone to high amounts of activity or dogs that may or may not have health issues. The residential areas are dominated by older colonial homes, small ranches, apartments, and duplexes that are situated close to the sidewalks and streets which can make your walks seem like a game to avoid stepping into private property. The well-established trees on sections of these roads, however, provide plenty of shade on a warm, sunny day and beautify the area, making it much more walkable. These streets are entirely residential and there are no commercial or retail businesses in these neighborhoods. That said, caution should still be taken when walking a dog across the street or past driveways, as cars can still drive in or pull out at any time of day.

How many greenways are there in Lewiston Rd/ Macklem Ave?

Two major state parks are within a short walk and an even shorter drive from the Macklem-Lewiston neighborhood. The closest park, De Veaux Woods State Park, is located directly across the street. This park is 51 acres, ten of which are an old-growth forest. Historic buildings dating from 1853, parkland, and open space are available for public use. There are nature trails that are perfect for dog walking and grills for a food break. De Veaux Woods State Park is connected via the Niagara Gorge with Whirlpool State Park. This park has two levels, an upper section that provides flat walkways with gorgeous views of the gorge and whirlpool in the Niagara River, and a lower part that descends a steep trail to the whirlpool itself. It is not recommended to walk a dog down to the whirlpool as the steps are too steep for a dog to handle and the water itself can be dangerous.
