The neighborhood of Charlotte can be found beside the western bank of the Genesee River along Lake Ontario; it is part of the Greater Rochester area in New York. The city was founded in 1788 by early settlers who purchased a small parcel of land from the Seneca tribe. As time progressed and more and more families settled there, the borders expanded. Charlotte was once a port for international trade back in the 1800s until the arrival of the Erie Canal, which greatly impacted its trade business.  Many ferries still provide transportation to New York City and surrounding areas.

Charlotte is home to some picturesque parks such as Ontario Beach Park and the historic Charlotte cemetery. This neighborhood is the perfect place to explore and walk with your leashed furry friends.

The city sidewalks are paved concrete and the streets are black asphalt here. These streets are surrounded by various scattered areas of well-manicured green spaces where you can literally stop and smell the roses with your Fido or Fifi. The area is flanked by two large bodies of water, so take a splash in the lake to cool off on a hot day!  If you are in the mood for a little history when your little furry friend is at home, be sure to visit the historic Charlotte cemetery.  Not only is it beautifully landscaped and maintained, it the burial place to infamous early American daredevil Sam Patch who was called the "Yankee Leaper" when, in 1829, he became the first American to take the plunge into the Niagara Falls from a raised platform. He, unfortunately, repeated his stunt later in the year from a higher height, this time falling to his death.

The next time you and Fido or Fifi are looking for something to do on a gorgeous day, pack a picnic lunch, grab plenty of water and doggy doo bags and head to Genesee Valley Greenway! This 68.8-mile corridor of land has it all - fishing, horseback riding, mountain biking, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing areas abound! When you and your furry friend are spending some quality time together, we recommend GVG's many walking/hiking trails. For your pup's safety, please keep them on lease while inside the Greenway.  Be sure to stay hydrated and clean up after yourself (or your little furry poopers). The trail surfaces are varied from cinder to dirt to grass to gravel. Be sure to check your pup's paws at the end of the journey for splinters or any potential owies later on. When you are ready to rest, just pull up a seat at one of the Greenway's many picnic tables or benches along the way. Be sure to bring your camera in case you cross paths with area wildlife or pass a field of grazing horses at the many farms that line the Greenway.
