East Esker Trail is the longest trail in the park at 4.7 miles long. Along the way, you can admire diverse tree species and explore wildflower fields. Fun fact: dogs can smell flowers! Taking time to sniff the roses stimulates your dog's mind and also helps you be more mindful. Win-win!

Dog Parks in Rochester, NY

While every pup needs a daily walk, some breeds need to let loose now and then. Fortunately, Rochester is home to a couple of off-leash zones where Fifi can let their fur down.

First up is Greece Canal Dog Park. This off-leash area is separated into sections for large and small breeds. The dog park is part of a 577-acre community park that's packed with fun activities for the two-legged members of your crew, like geocaching, canoeing, and birdwatching. If your fur-child isn't ready to run free, keep the leash on and take a stroll along the park's trails instead.

Ellison Dog Park is the other off-leash area within the city limits. Slightly smaller at just shy of 450 acres, Ellison Park boasts lush forests, sports fields, and even a sledding hill. If your pup isn't quite ready for the off-leash area, hit the Coyote Den Trail instead. This trail wanders for just over a mile through pretty ponds home to local wildlife.

Before you set out for your excursion at one of Rochester's parks, be sure to check the rules. All dog park visitors must be members of Monroe County Dog Parks. To become a member and gain access to the parks, you'll need to:

  • obtain a dog ownership license with the city
  • complete an application, which includes a registration form and dog park agreement
  • submit a paper copy of your dog's license and rabies certificate
  • pay an application fee
  • ensure your pup wears up-to-date park membership tags

Sure, it seems like a lot of red tape, but these regulations help keep our four-footed friends safe! Once your application is approved, you'll receive a membership tag and swipe card. These let you visit Monroe County's dog parks from 7 AM until sundown.
