Overview

Nom Nom is a fresh dog food brand that prides itself on offering “real, good food for dogs.” Its recipes feature human-grade ingredients and are formulated by a Board Certified Veterinary Nutritionist, taking the guesswork out for pet parents. To make things even more convenient, the meals are pre-portioned according to each dog’s needs and delivered straight to the customer’s door.
Read on for Wag!’s comprehensive Nom Nom dog food review to find out why we highly rate this fresh dog food brand.

Nom Nom dog food flavors
Nom Nom has four fresh dog food recipes, all cooked in the company’s own kitchens. With around five main ingredients in each recipe - aside from supplements - Nom Nom is an excellent choice for dogs with specific food allergies and sensitivities.
Beef Mash
Beef Mash is formulated to help build and maintain muscle. It’s suitable for all life stages, including puppies and seniors. The top five ingredients are beef, potatoeseggscarrots, and peas.
Eggs are high in omega-3 fatty acids that support everything from immunity to brain function. Carrots are high in beta-carotene, which promotes eye and skin health. With above-average protein (34.7% as dry matter) and near-average fat (17.3% as dry matter) levels - and only 182 calories per cup - Nom Nom Beef Mash is a good choice for senior dogs.
Chicken Cuisine
Chicken Cuisine features mixed fiber sources and is a great option for supporting gut and overall health regardless of age. The top five ingredients are chicken, sweet potatoes, squash, spinach, and sunflower oil.
Sweet potatoes and squash are great fiber sources, aiding digestion, while spinach is rich in iron and calcium, supporting bone and circulatory health. Nom Nom Chicken Cuisine dog food has above-average protein (36.9% as dry matter) and above-average fat (26% as dry matter) compared to similar fresh dog foods.
Pork Potluck
Studies show pork is a rare dog allergen, making Pork Potluck a good choice for pups with food sensitivities and dietary restrictions. The top 5 ingredients are pork, potatoes, green beans, squash, and kale.
Kale is high in antioxidants to give your pup an immune boost. This recipe also contains mushrooms, which are high in selenium, which is key to your canine's immune system. Pork Potluck has a higher fat-to-protein ratio than Nom Nom's other recipes, with 28% protein as dry matter and 20% fat as dry matter.
Turkey Fare
While dogs of all ages can enjoy Turkey Fare, its soft and chewable texture makes it especially good for pups with missing teeth and small mouths. The top 5 ingredients are turkeybrown rice, eggs, carrots, and spinach.
Turkey Fare is Nom Nom's only grain-inclusive recipe—it includes brown rice, one of the healthiest grains you'll find in dog foods. Brown rice is high in fiber, B vitamins, and vitamin D. Nom Nom Turkey Fare contains 35.7% protein as dry matter and 17.8% fat as dry matter. With just 168 calories per cup, it's another good option for senior pups.

Concerns & considerations
Here are a few things to consider before you buy Nom Nom.
Cost
Since Nom Nom is a premium dog food that is prepared fresh with high-quality ingredients and no fillers, it unsurprisingly comes at a higher price. The cost of a subscription ranges between $85 and $600 per month, depending on your dog’s size and activity level.
Nom Nom states that it costs about $105 a week to feed a 30-pound dog. That being said, Nom Nom has multi-pet offers and significant discounts for new customers.
Requires refrigeration
Nom Nom fresh dog food does not contain any preservatives and will need to be refrigerated or frozen once it arrives at your doorstep. Depending on the frequency of your deliveries, your dog’s meals can take up a lot of freezer or refrigerator space.
Limited choice of recipes
While Nom Nom recipes are suitable for all life stages, you might find more variety from other brands. Nom Nom also currently does not offer prescription diets for dogs with certain medical conditions.

What pet parents say about Nom Nom dog food
“Since I've been using it, my dog literally dances every time I pull one of those packets out of their fridge and she sees it. So, to me, that's the proof in the pudding. And I love the fact that NomNomNow is using fresh ingredients. And when I look at that dog food, I can actually see the meat and the vegetable, and I can tell what the ingredients are just [by] visually looking at it.”
“I am happy to report my dog has been on NomNom for 3 months with no vomiting! She even does a little jump every time I bring her food bowl over. She loves this food! Her coat has gotten really silky and soft and she has the energy to wrestle our wild puppy.”
“It looks like real human grade food and not just frozen mush shoved into a container. I like how the portions are individually packaged and I don’t have to cut the portion in half for two feedings a day. The only complaint is that sometimes [the] pull corner on the package doesn’t open it and I have to cut it open with a knife. My dog loves it and she has [a] shiny coat and sheds less.”

Nom Nom brand history
Nom Nom was founded in 2014 by Alexandria Jarrell, Nate Phillips, and Zach Phillips. The year prior, they had adopted two Miniature Australian Shepherds, Harlee and Mim. While searching for food for the girls, they were surprised to see that the dog food space was dominated by products that had unpronounceable ingredients and industrial filler—something that hasn’t changed since the 1980s.
So they decided to cook for Mim and Harlee, knowing that real, fresh food would benefit canines just as it does humans. Cooking fresh also became more important when Harlee developed health issues and her vet recommended a fully fresh diet. By late 2014, Nate, Zach, and Alex had started delivering to family and friends as well.
As Harlee’s health improved and the team received positive feedback about the food and service, they decided to bring in an expert nutritionist to help them formulate the best possible recipes. Dr. Justin Shmalberg, a Board Certified Veterinary Nutritionist, joined Nom Nom and was personally involved in the formulation of all the initial recipes to ensure that pet parents receive the highest quality food for their furbabies.

Nom Nom dog food recalls
Nom Nom issued a voluntary recall on July 8th, 2021 for its Chicken Cuisine recipe for cats, which is now discontinued. This recall was issued by its supplier, Tyson Foods Inc.due to possible listeria contamination.
Nom Nom fresh dog food has never been recalled at the time of writing.
