Concerns & considerations
Here are a few things to consider before you buy Nom Nom.
Can be pricey
Since Nom Nom is a premium dog food that is prepared fresh with high-quality ingredients and no fillers, it unsurprisingly comes at a higher price. The cost of a subscription ranges between $85 and $600 per month, depending on your dog’s size and activity level.
Nom Nom states that it costs about $5 to $6.50 per day to feed a 30-pound dog; if your pup is a similar size, you can expect to spend around $160 per month. That being said, Nom Nom offers multi-pet discounts and other cost-saving options.
Requires refrigeration
Nom Nom fresh dog food does not contain any preservatives and will need to be refrigerated or frozen once it arrives at your doorstep. Depending on the frequency of your deliveries, your dog’s meals can take up a lot of freezer or refrigerator space.
Limited choice of recipes
While Nom Nom recipes are suitable for all life stages, you might find more variety from other brands. Nom Nom also currently does not offer prescription diets for dogs with certain medical conditions.
What pet parents say about Nom Nom
“Since I've been using it, my dog literally dances every time I pull one of those packets out of their fridge and she sees it. So, to me, that's the proof in the pudding. And I love the fact that NomNomNow is using fresh ingredients. And when I look at that dog food, I can actually see the meat and the vegetable, and I can tell what the ingredients are just [by] visually looking at it.”
“I am happy to report my dog has been on NomNom for 3 months with no vomiting! She even does a little jump every time I bring her food bowl over. She loves this food! Her coat has gotten really silky and soft and she has the energy to wrestle our wild puppy.”
“It looks like real human grade food and not just frozen mush shoved into a container. I like how the portions are individually packaged and I don’t have to cut the portion in half for two feedings a day. The only complaint is that sometimes [the] pull corner on the package doesn’t open it and I have to cut it open with a knife. My dog loves it and she has [a] shiny coat and sheds less.”

Nom Nom was founded in 2014 by Alexandria Jarrell, Nate Phillips, and Zach Phillips. The year prior, they had adopted two Miniature Australian Shepherds, Harlee and Mim. While searching for food for the girls, they were surprised to see that the dog food space was dominated by products that had unpronounceable ingredients and industrial filler—something that hasn’t changed since the 1980s.
So they decided to cook for Mim and Harlee, knowing that real, fresh food would benefit canines just as it does humans. Cooking fresh also became more important when Harlee developed health issues and her vet recommended a fully fresh diet. By late 2014, Nate, Zach, and Alex had started delivering to family and friends as well.
As Harlee’s health improved and the team received positive feedback about the food and service, they decided to bring in an expert nutritionist to help them formulate the best possible recipes. Dr. Justin Shmalberg, a Board Certified Veterinary Nutritionist, joined Nom Nom and was personally involved in the formulation of all the initial recipes to ensure that pet parents receive the highest quality food for their furbabies.
Nom Nom recall history
Nom Nom issued a voluntary recall in 2021 for its Chicken Cuisine recipe for cats, which is now discontinued, due to a recall issued by its supplier, Tyson Foods. Nom Nom fresh dog food has never been recalled.
