It is affordably priced, providing grain-free and tailored recipes to cater to various dietary preferences and needs.”

Probiotics for gut health

Gut health is crucial to support a strong immune system and to help your fur-baby stay in the best possible shape. Solid Gold cat food recipes are designed to promote a strong gut microbiome and support the beneficial bacteria on your pet’s GI tract. With this in mind, Solid Gold says its kibble contains over 90 million active probiotics per pound.

Concerns & considerations

Grain-free formulas

Many products in the Solid Gold cat food range are grain-free. Grain-free diets are a controversial choice in the eyes of some pet parents in the wake of the FDA investigation into potential links between grain-free diets that are high in legumes and canine dilated cardiomyopathy

Grain allergies are rare in cats, while there’s also no significant body of scientific evidence to indicate that cats need a grain-free diet. A more recent statement by the FDA suggests their investigation includes both grain-free and grain-inclusive dog foods.

Pricey

While there are more expensive cat food brands on the market, there are also more affordable ones. Some customers complain that Solid Gold is too expensive, so if you’re on a tight budget, you may want to consider other budget-friendly cat food options.

Wet food not made in the USA

Solid Gold wet cat food is made in Thailand. So, if you’d prefer to have the peace of mind of feeding your fur-baby a food that’s manufactured in the USA, you’ll need to feed Solid Gold dry food or consider foods from other brands.

What pet parents say about Solid Gold cat food

“My rescued junkyard cat was severely underweight and refusing all sorts of food at her foster homes. When I adopted her I eventually got her to eat this reliably. Four years she has eaten all of the Solid Gold grain-free foods reliably, and will only barely eat any other kind. Not sure why, but this cat loves this stuff and my vet approved it as long as she gets wet food and plenty of water too. She likes the quail one too. Lord above, PLEASE never discontinue this food.”

“My household LOVES Solid Gold. We have to put the bowl up sometimes because the cats won't stop eating it!”

“I am 10 years old and have eaten this variety of Solid Gold since I was a kitten. Mom likes it 'cause it's not messy like wet food (which I LOVE the extra gravy kinds, but she won't buy them). She's tried me on other kinds of dry foods, but I turn my nose up at them. (I'd never turn my nose up at turkey or chicken wet food, but I don't have a job so I can't buy any myself.)”

Solid Gold cat food history

The story behind Solid Gold is an intriguing tale that starts back in 1974. It was then that Sissy Harrington McGill, a Great Dane lover and a regular in the show ring, traveled to Germany. While there, she noticed that European Great Danes lived longer than their American cousins, and she eventually came to the conclusion that the reason for this discrepancy was the difference in diet.

Inspired by this revelation, Sissy made it her mission to bring higher-quality pet food to her homeland. She created her first recipe, Hund-N-Flocken, and Solid Gold was born.

Solid Gold has since branched out into cat food as well as dog food, and was acquired by Health & Happiness Group International Holdings Ltd. The group also owns Zesty Paws, which produces supplements for pets.

Solid Gold cat food recalls

There have been no recalls of Solid Gold cat foods as of March 2025.

In 2012, Solid Gold issued a voluntary recall for foods from its Wolf Cub line of dog food. The recall was in response to potential Salmonella contamination after Salmonella was found in Diamond Pet Foods’ South Carolina facility where the food was manufactured.
