Downtown Pennsboro
When searching for a great place to hike with your pup, Downtown Pennsboro offers access to the North Bend Rail Trail which covers over 72 miles. You can access the trail off old highway U.S. 50 and travel either east or west. The Pennsboro trailhead begins at mile marker 38.7, and you can park at the train depot. You can also take advantage of the restrooms before beginning your hike. Both you and your pup will enjoy some amazing scenery along the trail. Make sure to keep Fido on a leash and bring your own doggie waste bags.

City Center Harrisville
If you travel about 10 miles southwest of Pennsboro, you will find a great place to let your pooch stretch his legs. The Harrisville Town Park is located in the middle of town, and features a well-maintained walking trail where you and your pup can walk some laps. The benches near the tennis courts are perfect when you and Fido need a rest, and there is even a small creek that runs through the park. The playground is great if the kids need to run off some energy, and you can relax with your pup in the covered picnic area and enjoy a snack.

North Bend State Park
The North Bend State Park is located about 14 miles southwest in the town of Cairo, and features over 2,000 acres along the Hughes River where you and Fido can spend the day. There are hiking trails throughout the area tht are part of the Rail to Trail system. If you need a place to stay, the lodge offers cabins and a restaurant with outdoor seating. Fido will have a great time running through the wooded areas and sniffing the plants and trees. You will need to keep your pooch on a leash here, as there is a variety of wildlife roaming the area!

South Waverly
In the town of Waverly, the Mountwood Dog Park is the perfect place to take your pup. The dog park is open all year round, and during the summer, there are fun Fire Hydrant watering stations. With 22,000 square feet of space, there is a separate area for large dogs and smaller pups. The double gated entry helps ensure your pooch stays safe, and there are plenty of shaded benches for pup parents to relax and chat with friends. The doggie waste stations provide bags and a place to dispose of trash, so be sure to clean up. In the main park, you can enjoy fishing or boating, or just walking around in the great outdoors.
Jug Wildlife
An interesting destination for you and your pup is the Jug Wildlife Management Area in Middlebourne, just 20 miles northeast of Pennsboro. The area is named for the shape of the area around Middle Island Creek. You can take your pooch for a walk through the area, but keep him on a leash. The wildlife roams freely, and you will see a variety of plants and animals throughout your hike. You will even see a dam that was built to supply water to a mill, and when the creek is full, there is a beautiful waterfall.
