Fiesta Island is a small island peninsula in Mission Bay, just off the coast of San Diego. Without any residential homes or businesses, the entirety of the island is one large park- and it allows dogs! Even better, this island lets dogs romp and roam its entire area off leash! While not technically a dog park, the fact that puppers can explore everything on this island, from the expansive beaches and coastline, to the areas inland off leash, has made Fiesta Island party central for San Diego dogs!
Often the site of special events such as charity runs and bicycle races, the island is for public use. While the island itself is open 24 hours a day, vehicle traffic is restricted between the hours of 10 PM to 4 AM. Whether you decide to spend an afternoon or camp out on the beach near one of the bonfire rings, you and your pup are going to love this place! To get here, just follow East Mission Bay Drive to get to Fiesta Island Road which is the one main road of the island. If you want to bike or hike through the island, there is a dirt parking lot right at this intersection.
Fiesta Island Road winds around the island, and you are free to pull off anywhere and let your dog explore off leash, always while under voice command. Inland, there are large fields your dog will love to play fetch in. Around the entirety of the island are the coastlines! The beach side of the island features lots of waves pups can splash in, while the bay side has much calmer waters. From the coasts of the island, views abound of Downtown San Diego and Mission Bay.
Biking, hiking, water skiing, bonfires on the beach, and picnics are just some of the pawsome activities many enjoy here. You can bring food and drinks, but no alcohol or glass containers. And while this retreat is a puptastic spot for your dog to run in utter freedom, there aren't any amenities due to the undeveloped nature of the island, so you'll need to plan ahead. Always bring water to share with your thirsty pup. Clean-up bags are available at the entrance to Fiesta Island, so if you furgot yours, be sure to grab several for your stay. Always stoop and scoop, and pack out whatever trash you have with you. There also aren't any human restrooms, so plan accordingly.
This pup oasis is free to enter, and parking is wherever you pull over. While rarely crowded, there are often events. You can get a permit for your own event at Fiesta Island, and even bring in portable toilets. Be aware that the yearly Over the Line Tournament on Fiesta Island in July is the only event that restricts dogs. There is also no shade on the island, so if you are planning to spend some time here, you may want to bring an umbrella or tent to provide your pup with some much-needed shade. With no fences anywhere, a GPS tracker for your pup is a good idea.
So if your San Diego pup is begging for some off leash fun, bring them to the pawtastic off leash experience that can only be found on Fiesta Island!
