Monterey State Beach

Monterey State Beach creates a wealth of opportunities for recreation, drawing in visitors and locals alike. Anglers can fish at Monterey State Beach, as long as they have the required permit. For those who prefer to take a leisurely stroll, consider trying your hand at beachcombing. The shore is mainly flat, making it easier to wander, giving you a chance to track down some tidepools too.

If you want a bit of an adventure, you can geocache in the area. This lets you combine hiking with treasure hunting, making for a family-friendly event that may even come with a small souvenir. Just make sure to bring an item with you to leave in the cache if you take a trinket, ensuring others who come after you can find their own treasure.

Typically, beach fires are permitted at Monterey State Beach. However, severe fire seasons during the warmer months have led to periodic burn bans. Before you start a fire, make sure there aren’t restrictions in place. Otherwise, you could face a citation. However, gas camp stoves are allowed in the park, giving you a way to grill up a quick meal.

If you bring your pooch to Monterey State Beach, you need to stay on the south end of the park and keep them on a leash at all times. Dogs are not allowed north of the Monterey Beach Resort Hotel but can enjoy some time with the sand and surf on the southern portion of the shoreline.

Additionally, you need to remove any pet waste created by your furry companion promptly. Not only is this legally required, but it also keeps the beach clean and enjoyable for all who visit.
