Pomponio State Beach

A coastal strip of beach that’s several miles long, Pomponio State Beach is filled with downward sloping shoreline and sandstone bluffs, as well as a lagoon. Often uncrowded, it’s a good choice if you find some of the other beaches in the area too crowded for your liking. Far from a “perfect,” manicured beach, with its driftwood, tufts of shrubby grass and rambling outline, Pomponio State Beach is picturesque all in its own, unique way.

Amenities include a free parking lot and picnic areas with barbecues, as well as hiking trails. If you walk far enough on either side, you’ll reach other state beaches (note that these other secluded beaches sometimes host nude sunbathers). Popular activities on the beach are boating, fishing, swimming, windsurfing, surfing, and geocaching. The vista point is also a great spot for photos. The beach additionally has an interesting history, as it was named after a local Native American outlaw, José Pomponio Lupugeym. 

The public parking lot is the only convenient place to reach the beach, as it’s separated from the road by thick vegetation and the sandstone bluffs. The lot, on the other hand, gives you access to the mouth of a creek, and the lagoon, through which you can make your way down to the ocean. 

The rules for dogs on this beach have changed over time, so pay attention to posted signage. Prohibited activities on the beach include bonfires, collecting shells and driftwood, fireworks, camping, ATVs, and drones. A permit is required for any photography or filming, as well as hosting any group events. When bringing your dog, be sure to respect the other beachgoers and keep your dog on a leash and make sure they are as little of a bother as possible. While you may love your dog’s beach antics, others may not.
