Rodeo Beach (Golden Gate National Recreation Area)

Rodeo Beach is located in the Marin Headlands and is part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. This makes it a stone’s throw from the Golden Gate Bridge in Sausalito, California. Dogs are allowed to join you on the beach off-leash. The beach is fairly popular, so keep this in mind while making plans.

The beach is picturesque. It is not like other beaches in that it is speckled with green, blue, brown, and red pebbles. Unfortunately, you’re not allowed to pick them up and take them with you. The rocks give the beach a very dark color. 

It is also home to Bird Rock, and you can do some top notch bird watching from Rodeo Lagoon. The beach also has areas to picnic, restrooms, and is close to many trails. You can also visit some of the former military bases in the area that have become visitors centers. Since Rodeo Beach is located near San Francisco, this is not usually a warm beach and the water is cooler. Keep this in mind while dressing for the beach and be prepared.

As mentioned, your dog can be off-leash on Rodeo Beach. However, your dog must respond to your commands. Since there will be other dogs off-leash, you should consider carefully if your dog will do well around other canines running around. If not, it might be good to keep them leashed.

For a great day at the beach, it is also helpful to bring your pooch a bowl, food, and plenty of water. If they like to play fetch, you could also bring them a toy. Most importantly, be a responsible pet parent and be sure to clean up after your pooch. There’s nothing that ruins an afternoon on the beach more than stepping in a pile of dog poop. So, keep bags ready and be sure to dispose of everything properly.
