This is a well-known, dog-friendly campground for hiking and mountain biking. It is close to Morro Bay’s sandy beaches, where people come to enjoy fishing, surfing, sailing, kayaking and scuba diving, among other things. The Cerro Alto Campground provides relaxation and serenity as well as exciting activities, dining and shopping opportunities. You will love the 360-degree view of the Central California coast. The 4-mile Cerro Alto Trail that takes you to the peak starts from this campground.
There are 22 campsites, all of them single-family. 8 of these are only for tents, 10 can also accommodate RVs and trailers, while 4 require a short walk to reach them. All sites have a table, grill, and campfire ring. Drinking water and vault toilets are also provided. Trash bins are available throughout the campground, so please clean up after yourself and your dog. The campground is located in a forest that’s a combination of pine, mixed oak, and sycamore at a 1,000-foot elevation.
When bringing your dog here, be mindful of the poison oak. Your Pooch might stick their face into this and then lick you. Keep them leashed, as mandated by the campground rules, and have them under constant adult supervision. At night, make sure your doggo is confined to a tent or vehicle. Moreover, there are many feisty squirrels that taunt and chitter. If your dog is protective and vigilant, they may bark and growl at them and some other animal sounds.
Among the many activities that campers enjoy here are mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, and bird watching. You can also find an 18-hole championship golf course in the ocean-side town. The manager, described as helpful and polite, is always available. While not too private, it is a cozy, clean, and comfortable campground. It has all the elements of a great dog-friendly campground with plenty of amazing scenic beauty and activities. You can rest, have fun, or do both – it’s your call.
