Situated in the forest that surrounds Lake Mendocino, Chekaka Campground is a small, family-friendly place to set up camp. The forests of Coyote Valley are comprised of beautiful manzanita and pines, setting the scene for picturesque campsites nestled deep in the trees. Close by is also the Coyote Valley Dam, which is responsible for the lake itself.Â
Stay here with your favorite furry friend for a little or a while at one of the 20 sites available. Seventeen of these are reservable, single-family sites, allowing you to plan your adventure up to 6 months in advance. Each lot has its own campfire grill, lantern post, and picnic table to make your stay more comfortable. Rigs up to 35 feet will be able to fit at the campground. You'll also have access to drinking water and a horse staging area while staying at Chekaka.Â
Fill your days up with hours at the lake boating, fishing, or swimming in the cool waters. If you're up for it, there's a disc golf course at the lake, providing you with 18 holes worth of fun! Younger campers can burn some more energy off at the playground, and hikers of all ages (and species) will enjoy taking on the trails that circle Lake Mendocino. You can even bring your bike if you'd like, as the area has some great mountain biking areas.
Canines are welcome at the Chekaka Recreation Area, but please keep them on a standard leash at all times. They also ask that you do not leave Fido alone at any point during your stay. Be a good pup parent and be sure to pick up any dog bombs your woofer happens to leave behind -- and make sure to bring enough poop bags along to last your trip!
For any looking to have a relaxing break at the lake, Chekaka offers a calm haven in the woods. If that sounds like what you're after, be sure to check it out for yourself!
