Grays Meadow is a beautiful high-desert campground located on peaceful Independence Creek. This campground offers both shaded and sunny campsites, and it’s surrounded by picturesque mountains, including the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States, Mount Whitney.Â
If you’re hoping to do some hiking during your camping trip, there are plenty of great trails near Grays Meadow. One of the closest trails to the campground is the Shepherds Pass Trail. This trail climbs up 6,000 feet and passes stunning alpine lakes along the way.
Grays Meadow is also close to the scenic John Muir Wilderness. This area is full of mountainous trails that are perfect for day hikes. As you’re walking, you may get to see some of the area’s native wildlife, including pikas, pine marten, and mule deer. Pups are welcome to join you on these pawesome trails.
After you’ve finished hiking, you can relax and enjoy the many amenities at Grays Meadow Campground. If you’re an angler, Independence Creek is regularly stocked with trout, making this creek the perfect place to go fishing. There are also numerous campfire rings throughout the campground where you can relax by a roaring fire. If you get thirsty, drinking water is available at the campground.
When you get hungry, there are lots of scenic picnic tables where you and your pup can enjoy a meal or a snack together. Be aware that Grays Meadow is an active bear area — make sure to put your spare food in the bear-proof storage lockers the campground provides. Also, be sure not to leave any food in your car.
