Portagee Joe Campground is a small, cozy campground located by a mountain stream by the Sierra Mountains in Lone Pine, California. It is situated just a few miles away from Mt. Whitney, which is among the top ten highest peaks in the US. It is also close to the Alabama Hills, a popular filming location with notable mentions including Gladiator, Iron Man, and The Lone Ranger.
If you visit this campground, make sure to drive a few miles down to the Lone Pine Museum of Western Film and explore the charming town of Lone Pine. In addition to the above, the campground’s patrons will have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of hiking trails, biking, and climbing opportunities. A beautiful, active mountain stream runs through the Portagee Joe campground, which many patrons find soothing to fall asleep to.Â
The Portagee Joe campground is made up of 15 sites and has all the basics, which include a water spigot, dumpsters, a kiosk and vault toilets. There are also several picnic tables, fire rings, and plenty of shade. However, it is not the featured amenities that attract couples and small groups to a weekend away in the wilderness. The campground is situated by a stream and offers mountain views and clear night skies that are ideal for stargazing. It is the perfect place for a base camp that you can come back to after a day of hiking or climbing.
The campground is dog-friendly, which means furry four-legged family members are welcome to join in on the fun outdoors as long as they remain leashed during their visit. Although not ideal, the rules are understandable considering the wildlife that occasionally roams in the area. Be sure to store your food properly and use the designated trash receptacles. Dog waste bags are not provided, so don’t forget to pack enough to last the entire stay, which cannot exceed 15 days at a time.
Although the campground is tent and RV-friendly, the max length for recreational vehicles is 30 feet, so please keep that in mind.
