Introduction

Houston is a “pawpular” vacation destination for hounds and humans alike. Your tail-wagger will feel especially welcome here — the city even has its own organization dedicated to creating more dog-friendly businesses!

Fortunately, Houston has no shortage of fur-friendly spots. Pamper your pup at one of the city’s many doggy salons, indulge in Yappy Hour at a dog-friendly bar, or play the day away at more than a dozen dog parks. If you time your trip just right, you might catch a dog day at the local baseball stadium!

Looking to skip the luxury hotel for this vacay? Read on to discover our favorite dog-friendly campgrounds in and around Houston, “pawfect” for both city slickers and country-loving canines!

#1 Westlake RV Resort

This luxurious RV resort on the outskirts of the city features everything you and Fido could “pawssibly” need for a comfy camping trip. Westlake comes complete with a jacuzzi, swimming pool, well-stocked fishing lake, and even a dog wash station. Practice good “petiquette” and keep your pal on a leash (and their best behavior!) at all times. This park’s pet policies aren’t listed online, so we recommend contacting the resort directly with any questions or concerns.

#2 Galveston Island State Park

Located just an hour outside Houston, Galveston Island is packed with dog-friendly places to stay and play. After a long day exploring the area’s off-leash parks and dog-friendly beaches, rest up at Galveston Island State Park. Camp out right by the beach and enjoy all the standard amenities, like electric and water hookups, restrooms, and showers. Pets are welcome to stay in Texas state parks, provided they’re on-leash, well-behaved, and kept out of buildings.

#3 Galveston Island RV Resort

If you and Fifi prefer to camp in comfort, Galveston Island RV Resort might just be the “pawfect” fit! Humans can relax in the lazy river and hot tub, and hounds are invited to let loose in the park’s own bark park. Other services include an on-site store and outdoor games. Unfortunately, breed restrictions apply here: Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans, Chows, German Shepherds, and wolf hybrids are prohibited.

#4 Sam Houston National Forest

Situated 45 miles north of Houston, this national forest features three campgrounds and more outdoor activities than you can shake Fido’s favorite stick at! With more than 200 miles of multi-use trails, you’ll have plenty of places to take your pal for walkies. The campgrounds accommodate both tent and RV campers with full hookups, picnic tables, hot showers, and restrooms. Canine campers are welcome; just keep your pal on-leash and away from the swimming beaches.

#5 Lake Conroe/Houston North KOA

Traveling in a big rig and searching for a well-equipped (and wallet-friendly) campground near Houston? Consider Lake Conroe/Houston North KOA. This is a family-friendly spot complete with endless outdoor games, a jumping pillow, stocked fishing holes, and so much more. We have no doubt Fido’s favorite feature will be the on-site dog park! Standard leash and behavior rules apply for pets staying at KOA campgrounds, but specific policies may vary.

#6 Bastrop State Park

Nestled right in between Austin and Houston, Bastrop State Park is an ideal stopover for road trippers exploring the state's biggest cities. Bastrop offers some unique amenities, including a dining hall and a swimming pool. Campsites come equipped with full or partial RV hookups, picnic tables, grills, fire rings, and drinking water. As long as your favorite four-legged friend stays on-leash and out of buildings, they’re welcome to camp and explore Bastrop State Park with you.

#7 My Favorite Campground

Featuring 70 serene acres of Texas ranchland and all the comforts of home, My Favorite Campground will soon become your favorite campground! Just 50 miles north of Houston, this staying spot prides itself on being family-owned and family friendly. The two-acre lake welcomes paddlers and anglers. Amenities include full hookups, WiFi, restrooms, and showers. Pet owners must provide proof of rabies vaccination. The campground prohibits “aggressive” breeds but doesn’t list any specific breed restrictions.

#8 Brazos Bend State Park

A self-proclaimed “nature lover’s paradise” just 45 miles southwest of Houston, Brazos Bend is a hit with both human and hound-dog hikers. Just keep your eyes peeled for gators on your excursions! Yes, you heard us correctly — these cold-blooded beasts are the park’s main attraction, so it’s extra important that Sparky stays on-leash. The park’s campground offers more than 70 pet-friendly sites with electric hookups, picnic tables, fire rings. Restroom and shower facilities are also available.

#9 Gulf Coast RV Resort

If you’re traveling east of Houston, stop off at Gulf Coast RV Resort in historic Beaumont. This pet-friendly campground located 85 miles east offers easy access to I-10 as well as nearby nature preserves, including Big Thicket and McFaddin. This resort is nothing short of luxurious, with a book exchange, swimming pool, exercise room, and a playground. Additional services include laundry facilities, souvenirs, and an on-site store. Pets are welcome, but no policies are listed.

#10 Stephen F. Austin State Park

Last but certainly not least on our list of dog-friendly Houston campgrounds, this outdoor oasis is located just under 50 miles west of the city. Whether you choose to hike through the park’s wooded wonderland, sniff out the San Felipe de Austin Historic Site, or perhaps do a bit of both, you and Spot will have a doggone good time here! The park’s campground features full hookups, restrooms, and showers. Leashed, well-behaved pets are welcome.
