A paddleboarder's paradise, the perfect home base for hiking enthusiasts and nature lovers --Â Widewaters Campground is a truly furrific camping spot. The tent and RV campground accommodates primitive camping and provides spacious, secluded sites that are pet-friendly. If you are searching for a rustic retreat, far enough from civilization to feel the quiet of the wilderness but not far enough to feel unsafe -- this place is going to be pawfect for you and your canine companion!
The remote Widewaters Campground is situated in the Hiawatha National Forest in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, just under 15 miles from Munising. It is sandwiched between Lakes Superior, Michigan, and Irwin. It offers easy access to the Indian River, which you and your friends can paddle down, especially since the campground features a boat ramp on-site. Anglers will be happy to find brook trout, Northern pike, and largemouth bass in the neighboring lakes and rivers.Â
For the four-pawed fitness enthusiasts, the 9-mile Bruno’s Run Trail that runs through the campground is the purrfect place for some leashed exercise and sniffing. Just watch out for the other hikers, bikers, and horse-riders on the trail. For senior dogs and casual hikers, there are level paths that run by the Indian River, with benches along the way perfect for resting with a view. Please note that most of the trails are ungroomed and grassy, so be sure to check your pooch for ticks!
The 34-site campground does not offer electric, water, or sewer hookups but costs only $20 per night. All of the campsites are large, but most of them are also well-spaced out which means you won’t hear your neighbors. Instead, you can fully relax and enjoy the forest sounds of birds chirping and the nearby river flowing. There are several sites that are waterfront and a few that offer less privacy but more sunshine, so make sure you state your preference when you reserve your spot. Each site comes with its own picnic table and fire ring with grill. Gorgeous hardwoods surround the campground -- please be responsible and never leave active fires unattended.
Widewaters Campground features ADA-accessible vault toilets, and there are approved drinking water pumps scattered throughout the campground, making it an excellent vacation destination for every member of the family.
