Description

In the Northwest corner of New York, the Buckhorn Island State Park sits beside the Canadian border. With a total of 895 acres of marsh, meadow, and wooded area, the park has plenty of day-use areas for guests to enjoy. The park is also an awesome place to spend the day with your family, including your four-legged ones.

Primarily an exhibit of Niagra River wetlands, the park is currently managed as a preserve. Some of the park areas have been set aside for bird conservation to protect several threatened species, including the least bittern, northern harrier, common tern, and sedge wren.

Activites available in Buckhorn Island State Park range from nature trails for hiking or biking to fishing and more. Buckhorn Island State Park is even open during the winter for cross-country skiing. On the water, guests to Buckhorn Island State Park can kayak, canoe, and fish.

There is a four-mile trail in the park and runs along Niagra River, with access points to river banks and spectacular views. The path is easy for all hikers, even children and pets. Buckhorn Island State Park is open year-round from sunrise to sunset. No overnight visits are permitted. The park does not have any restrooms available, so plan your visit accordingly.

Dogs are permitted in Buckhorn Island State Park, but they must be on a leash no greater than six feet long or caged at all times. Bring dog waste bags and clean up after your pet. It is your responsibility to remove your dog's waste. Also, if you take your dog walking with you, bring enough water for yourself and your pet.

Make sure you have current proof of rabies vaccination and don’t bring unvaccinated puppies, females in heat, dogs with aggression problems, or dogs who bark excessively. Be respectful of posted rules and other park guests.

If you are in the Northwest New York area and are looking for a beautiful spot to take a walk or enjoy a beautiful natural environment, bring your family and furry companion to Buckhorn Island State Park. You and your furry four-legged friend will be glad you did.
