Castle Rock State Park

For a furrific outdoor experience in northwestern Illinois, make your way to Castle Rock State Park! Dedicated as a state park in 1978, this 2,000-acre site sits on the west bank of the Rock River in Ogle County and features natural resources that are unique to the state. There are also a variety of recreational activities for everyone to enjoy, so bring the entire family, including your four-legged members!

Athletic puppers will be happy to know that there are 7 miles of trails to explore at Castle Rock. Meandering through the northern and southern portions of the site, these marked hiking trails offer pawtastic vistas and wildlife opportunities, making them the best way to experience the beauty of the area. Discover the park's rolling topography as you and Fido follow the trails past rock formations, ravines, and plant associations. One of the largest significant natural areas in northern Illinois, Castle Rock is home to several distinctive plant species that are remnants of the native forest and prairie. Most of the park's puptacular natural features are protected in a 710-acre nature preserve, which can only be used for scientific study and limited interpretation activities.

After your hike, stop by one of the picnic areas to rest your legs and refuel with a packed lunch. The park has three picnic shelters with tables, grills, drinking water, and toilets. You'll also find tables scattered along the river. If you plan on spending the night at Castle Rock, be sure to bring a canoe, as there is only a primitive canoe camping area that's accessible by boat. Wherever you and Fido go in the park, make sure to keep your furry friend on a leash at all times. Don't forget to bring doggie waste bags for scooping up whatever your pooch puts down!
