Description

Cherry Plain State Park is a 175-acre state park residing in southern New York. Originally private hunting lands, the entire landscape was donated to the city in 1948. Fishing is a big attraction here, with many locals coming to enjoy Black River Pond's array of fish including bass, bullheads, and pickerel species.

A boat launch also exists on the lake, so if you own watercraft feel free to obtain a permit and bring it out for an experience. Dogs are allowed on the shoreline provided they stay on leash at all times. Park officials recommend keeping canines away from the boat launching area. Adjacent to the boat launch is a sandy beach with a connected swimming area.

This beach is regularly staffed with lifeguards during the summer months, and deck chairs are available for rental from the beach office. Canines are prohibited from the public swimming areas but are allowed on the shoreline provided they stay on a 6-foot leash or shorter. If you're more into hiking, there are 3.56 miles of hiking trails to wander.

These are paved trails, and generally speaking, a hike here isn't very taxing for even older individuals. During the winter months, these trails become densely populated by cross-country skiers and snowmobilers, so exercise caution when visiting during the colder seasons. Canines are permitted on these trails year round, provided they stay leashed up at all times.

If you're looking to camp, there are several "hike in" campsites that provide a simplistic area to rest your head during your longer excursions. There are also lakeside sites that offer full water and electrical hookups, as well as ten trailer sites if you're looking to bring an RV or camper along. Dogs are welcome on any of the hike-in sites, provided they stay on their leash.

They are; however, prohibited from the lakefront sites, as well as the RV platforms. Park officials would like to remind all pet owners that any visiting animals must be up to date on their rabies vaccinations, and owners must be carrying proof. Additionally, if you are camping on one of the pet-friendly sites, the maximum allowance is two animals at any given time.

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.
