The Church Hill Dog Park is a city-run off-leash area located in Chimborazo Park in Richmond, VA. The 30-acre Chimborazo Park is also home to a playground, a community garden, a visitor center, and a replica of the Statue of Liberty.
Chimborazo Park is laid out on the former site of one of the largest military hospitals in the world. It's conveniently located, offers 180-degree views of the city, and many neighborhood residents choose it for morning or evening walks with their fur babies.
The dog park is located on the eastern lower terrace of Chimborazo Park, overlooking the city beyond the rooftops of adjacent homes. The puppy playground is secured with a split-rail fence lined with wire backing and consists of two separate sections.
One section is meant for small or shy dogs and the other accommodates larger, more active hounds. Both enclosures are covered in grass and dirt and provide enough room for dogs to stretch their legs and explore. After wet weather, the exposed dirt spots can become muddy, but there's a hose for rinsing your pup before heading home.
Equipped with three canine cool-down stations, a kiddie pool for dogs to splash in, and a water hose with bowls, the off-leash area ensures the park’s four-legged patrons remain hydrated during their visit. Waste bags are also provided, but it's a good idea to bring some in case the supply runs out. Benches and picnic tables are scattered within the park, as well as a covered picnic area.
A few trees growing inside the Church Hill Dog Park at Chimborazo Park provide shade for both dogs and their human companions. Topping it off is a fake fire hydrant for pupper sniffing and marking.
To use the dog park, all pups must be healthy, licensed, and vaccinated, and aggressive players like persistent herding dogs may need to be removed if they're harassing other pooches.
