Claflin Playground Off Leash Area

Looking for a spot where your pup can run and play without a leash in Newtonville? You'll find it on the grounds of the former Claflin School on Lowell Avenue! Ruffly 10 miles west of downtown Boston, Claflin Playground is a 1.2-acre park that goes to the dogs during designated hours.

From March 16th through December 14th, your furry pal may ditch the leash and romp to their heart's content in the designated off-leash area during off-leash hours at Claflin Playground, which means during park hours from March 15th to December 15th. This is thanks to Newton's Off-Leash Recreation Program, which was created to maximize the city's parks and meet the needs of its four-legged residents and visitors. 

While Claflin Playground is a furrific place for your energetic pup to get their daily exercise, it's impawtant to always keep a close eye on them as the area is not completely fenced. If your pooch is still working on their recall, it's probably best to keep the leash on. Claflin Playground is a no-frills site, with its main draw being a sledding hill that's pawpular with children. There are no agility equipment, drinking fountains, or mutt mitt dispensers, so remember to bring your own water and waste bags. Since the park is a shared space, make sure your furry BFF has good manners and always clean up after them. 

All doggos using Claflin Playground must have an off-leash permit/medallion, which may be obtained at the Newton City Hall Clerk's Office. This applies to both residents and non-residents. Bring proof of your dog's license, proof of their current rabies certificate, and the fee, which is $50 per dog for residents and $100 per dog for non-residents. Once your off-leash medallion has been issued, your pooch must wear it before you go to the park.
