Description

Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park is tremendous. At 14,086 acres it is one of the larger state parks in the United States. It occupies two different counties, Duchess and Putnam. This park is quite versatile, offering a lot of amenities year-round for individuals of all ages. Camping opportunities abound at Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park, with 80 campsites to choose from.

The campground itself follows the natural rock formations that ring the park, allowing for beautiful views just outside of your tent. Each of these sites has a fire ring, charcoal grill, and picnic table. There are also several slots open for RV camping, albeit without any plumbing or electrical hookups. Shower and restroom facilities are located just next to these sites and are free to use.

Restrained canines are allowed on-leash everywhere on these campgrounds except the restroom facilities. Referred to as the "jewel" of Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park, Canopus Lake offers some fantastic beachside views and enjoyment. In addition to the swimming opportunities, the park provides rowboat rentals if you want to take a trip over the water.

If you are interested in bringing your own boat, you will need to get a regional boating permit through the park office. Fishing is quite popular here, so make sure to get in early. If you are looking to enjoy the lake or beach with your canine, make sure to steer clear of any designated swimming areas while keeping your dog on a 10-foot leash or shorter.

Hiking trails wind throughout most of the 14,000 acres of Clarence Fahnestock State Park. These trails vary dramatically in accessibility and use. A full list of these trails as well as a breakdown of what to expect from each is available online through the New York Parks' website. Dogs are allowed on the majority of these trails, provided you make sure to clean up after them and keep them properly leashed.

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.
