Description

Clay Pits Pond Preserve is situated in Staten Island, New York. Housed on 265 acres of property, this beautiful nature preserve offers much-varied terrain for families to explore. Among the topography families will encounter at Clay Pits Pond Preserve are the following: wetlands, sand areas, streams, woods, and ponds.

Evidence was uncovered that points to the area once having been used as a settling ground for a number of different people groupings including the Leni Lenape Indians, early European immigrants, and the Free Blacks of Sandy Ground.

Also found on the premises is the Interpretive Center at Clay Pit Ponds, a museum which outlines the rich history of the region as well as its geological contributions. The museum observes marginally different hours to the preserve, and it is in this building that the bathrooms are located.

Dogs may join their owners at Clay Pits Pond Preserve, but they must remain leashed at all times, and care must be exercised to ensure they do not disturb any of the wildlife indigenous to the region. Drinking water and poop bags are not provided. Owners must bring both of these items with them to the park. It is mandatory for all owners to clean up after their pets.

Clay Pits Pond Preserve is a private New York facility. Entrance to the grounds is provided upon the furnishing of an Empire Pass. Empire Passes are available at the cost of $80. These permits allow families to visit any New York state park at no additional cost for a period of one full calendar year. Though a daily permit is likely possible, it is unknown how much one would cost.

Among the most popular recreational opportunities at Clay Pits Pond Preserve are nature walks, the study of the local pond ecology, bird watching, and the identification of birds and flowers which make the preserve their home. The area is also well-suited to hiking, picnicking, and horseback riding. Visitors to Clay Pits Pond Preserve are bound to comply with all New York state legislation.

With this in mind, a current rabies vaccination and a city dog license are mandatory. Proof of both must be furnished to any Animal Control officer upon request. For a great day reconnecting with nature in a stunning New York preserve, plan a visit to Clay Pits Pond Preserve!
