Grafton Lakes State Park

Grafton Lakes State Park is a dense, forested plateau sandwiched between the Taconic and Hudson Valleys. It offers swimming, fishing, and wintertime hunting among its many recreational opportunities. Grafton Lakes State Park offers excellent fishing opportunities, with six ponds to choose from when dropping your hook. 

These ponds provide several species of fish, including bass, perch, and pickerel during their respective seasons. Would-be anglers should remember all necessary equipment before making the journey, as no rental or sale opportunities exist here for fishing. Except for local swimming areas, all shorelines are dog-friendly provided they stay on a 6-foot leash or shorter throughout their stay.

The 25 miles of hiking trails wind through the nearly 2,500 acres of forested landscape, offering ample opportunities to get a view of the surrounding plateau. These trails often play host to geocaching during the summer months, so make sure to check the park's event schedule if you'd like to participate. The nature paths here are generally quite tame, which makes them accessible to just about everyone, including canines. 

If you decide to bring your canine along, make sure to keep them restrained throughout your visit. Dog refuse stations are rare, so make sure to come prepared with plastic bags in case your canine companion leaves something behind. Winter sports enthusiasts are going to enjoy Grafton Lakes State Park, mainly due to the thriving snowmobiling and cross-country skiing communities. 

Several of the hiking trails inside of the park are groomed for these sports come first significant snowfall, and shouldn't be missed. Dog owners should keep in mind that during these periods, foot traffic is prohibited on these trails. Signs are posted every season, so keep a lookout if you're going to take a wintertime trek.

During the fall and winter seasons, hunting is an option for parkgoers as well, with deer and small game both being available. If you'd like to experience what this park's hunting season has to offer, make sure to obtain a valid hunting permit from the State of New York before your visit.
